In response to threats from the Trump Administration, LGBTQ activists are focusing their attention at the local level. The Montgomery County LGBTQ Democratic Club was recently formed to provide Democratic activists and members of the LGBTQ community with a venue to protect and expand the rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender individuals.
The organization will promote policies and candidates supporting the LGBTQ community, register voters and organize social events. Membership is open to members of the LGBTQ community, straight allies and other local groups engaged in advancing progressive causes.
“Marylanders voted for marriage equality in 2012, but members of Montgomery County’s LGBT community were lulled into a false sense of security. Now five years later, our community faces a growing threat from the Trump Administration,” club president Michael Knaapen said. “Organizing this club is a way to protect our rights and also help expand policies that support LGBTQ issues like transgender and adoption rights, family planning and healthcare services.”
The club will hold a social event on October 1 at Bar Louie in Rockville Town Square from 4-6 pm.
