Join Common Defense in DC! Tell Trump: OUR VA IS NOT FOR SALE
Join Common Defense in DC! Tell Trump: OUR VA IS NOT FOR SALE
May 5, 2025 - May 9, 2025 @
Washington, D.C.
Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Elon Musk have made it clear: Veterans and military families are on the chopping block. They want to: • Fire 80,000 VA employees • Gut funding for mental health treatment and the Veteran Crisis Line • Slash Medicaid, SNAP benefits, and training programs • Sell off vital services to the highest bidder But the momentum is on OUR side. Common Defense members from across the country have shared VA stories, rallied, and marched -- and we are just getting started! Just four weeks from today, Common Defense is mobilizing members to Washington, D.C. where we will let the administration know the VA is not for sale!
DC MOBILIZATION INTEREST FORM HERE https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScxViJw2PgWR9T8OUaClfaAq7Mtq5QMWHZSHBUaADPKPwJdRQ/viewform
We want to bring as many members to D.C. as possible and are actively fundraising to make that a reality, but regardless of whether you live in DC or want to pay your own way, you must fill out the Member Interest Form. After you fill out the form, an organizer will be in touch to discuss next steps. We hope to see you in D.C. soon! Thank you!

WDC Happy Hour with a Purpose - Dismantling Homeland Security
May 14, 2025 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Citizens and Culture, 8113 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910, USA
WDC is excited to host a conversation with Caitlin Durkovich on the “Impact of Dismantling DHS.”
$20 Members | $25 non-members
Register here.
Caitlin Durkovich was Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Homeland Security Advisor for Resilience and Response in the Biden-Harris White House.
Most Americans associate the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with securing our borders, managing immigration, and preventing terrorism. But its mission is far more expansive and instrumental to how we lead our everyday lives. DHS has the largest retail presence of any Federal government agency, and its employees and offices are located in hundreds of communities across the country. DHS performs life saving missions, enhances our preparedness and response to the increasing number and intensity of climate events, and ensures the resilience of the infrastructure we depend on every day, including safeguarding cyberspace and defending our election infrastructure from bad actors. In the last few months, many of DHS’s critical roles have been terminated or scaled back.
Ms. Durkovich joins us to explain how the dismantling of one of the largest federal departments will impact our everyday lives and what we can do to strengthen our community resilience.

RALLY: Unions demand justice for Kilmar Abrego Garcia and workers nationwide
RALLY: Unions demand justice for Kilmar Abrego Garcia and workers nationwide
May 22, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Freedom Plaza, Washington, DC 20004, USA
RSVP: https://actionnetwork.org/events/rally-unions-demand-justice-for-kilmar-abrego-garcia-and-workers-nationwide-2
On May 22 at 5 p.m., union leaders and workers across the DC area will rally at Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC, to demand justice and due process for SMART apprentice Kilmar Abrego Garcia and workers nationwide.
- Time: Rally starts at 5 p.m.
- Location: Freedom Plaza, 1325 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004
- Speakers: SMART General President Michael Coleman, labor leaders
The disappearance of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador is not just a cruel and unlawful attack on our union brother and his family. It’s a violation of Kilmar's constitutional right to due process — threatening the rights of every working American and undermining one of the pillars of our democracy.
Unions know that an injury to one is an injury to all, and an attack on the rights of Kilmar and others will lead to everyone’s rights being stripped next. If due process can be taken from one person, it can be taken from all of us. That’s why leaders and workers are rallying on Thursday, May 22, to demand justice and due process — for Kilmar and for all of us.
