Notice of Legislative District 16 State Delegate Vacancy

Sara Love notified the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee (MCDCC) that she has resigned her position as Maryland District 16 State Delegate, effective June 13, 2024, to accept the appointment to the District 16 State Senator position by the Governor.

By authority of Article III, Section 13 of the Constitution of Maryland, the MCDCC shall nominate a person to fill this vacancy within thirty days after the occurrence of the vacancy and submit the nominee’s name to the Governor. The person appointed by the Governor will serve for the unexpired term ending in January 2027.

HOW TO APPLY

Individuals interested in applying for this appointment should submit a statement of intent, resume, and/or any other supporting materials that they would like the MCDCC to consider by email to [email protected] with the subject line D16 Delegate Vacancy Application no later than Thursday, June 27, 2024 at 5 pm.

Applicants must also provide proof of continuous residency in Maryland District 16 for the past six months. Proof of residency may include a credit card bill, utility bill, bank statement, or mail from a federal, state, or local government agency showing the applicant’s address. Submit a current proof of residency and one dating back six months.

Once the vacancy has closed, the names and city of residence of applicants will be published on the MCDCC website. However, applicants are requested to indicate in their materials whether or not they would like to consent to the publication of their statement of intent and/or resume on the MCDCC website. The MCDCC reserves the right to not publish content based on existing content publishing policy.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must be a registered Democratic voter in the State of Maryland, a resident of Legislative District 16 for at least six months, and at least 21 years old.

Determination of eligibility for the appointment by the MCDCC shall be final and not subject to appeal. Candidates who meet the above qualifications will be invited to make a brief oral statement and answer questions by MCDCC members at the July 11, 2024 meeting. The MCDCC will vote to nominate a candidate after concluding the interviews and forward the nominee’s name to the Governor.

PUBLIC FORUM

The District 16 Democratic Club will host a forum for members of the public to meet the applicants on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at 7 pm via Zoom.

STATEMENTS OF SUPPORT

The public is invited to submit statements of support for their preferred candidate by 5 pm on Monday, July 8, 2024 using the form at bit.ly/d16-delegate-support or via email at [email protected].

MCDCC SPECIAL MEETING

The MCDCC will interview all qualified applicants and vote to recommend a candidate to the Governor to fill the vacancy during a special meeting on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 6:30 pm. All applicants must attend in person.

The meeting will be open to the public and held in-person at MCDCC Headquarters, 12320 Parklawn Drive, Rockville, MD 20852, and will be live-streamed via Zoom webinar.
